On Wednesday, the importance of water conservation in the current scenario was explained to farmers at a programme held at P.K.R. Arts College for Women in Gobichettipalayam (Tamil Nadu). The Kisan Mela was organized by ICAR KVK MYRADA under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan with the theme "Catch the rain, where it falls, and when it falls."
P. Alagesan, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK, provided an overview of the programme, while N.R. Nagaraj, Chairman of Gobichettipalayam Municipality, discussed the importance of water conservation in the current climate.
S. Chinnasamy, Erode's Joint Director of Agriculture, emphasized the importance of rainwater harvesting and water conservation in agriculture through the use of drip irrigation systems. N. Ezhili, the college's principal, and Kumerasan, Fullerton India's branch manager, also spoke.
The importance of micro irrigation systems and water conservation techniques was discussed by Valliyammai, Professor of Water Technology Centre, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. G. Subramanian, Assistant Engineer, Agricultural Engineering Department, highlighted the water conservation schemes available.
College students competed in speech and poster competitions on rainwater harvesting, water conservation, and community water body management. The winners were presented with certificates. KVK organized an exhibition on agriculture, drip irrigation, and drone technology. During the programme, a drone spraying fertilizer demonstration was also performed.
Water conservation is critical for two reasons. To begin, we are experiencing a global water shortage, which is being exacerbated by climate change. Second, we rely on water for survival. A fundamental issue of our time is the combination of an increasingly desperate water crisis and our reliance on water.
Although agricultural business stakeholders, in my opinion, are becoming more aware of the water risks in their portfolios, there is still work to be done in improving risk analysis and mitigation strategies. Water and other agricultural supply chain risks are being disclosed more widely by regulatory bodies and the industry as a whole. Water security requires proper analysis and mitigation strategies to ensure productivity, profitability, and sustainability.
