NHAI organised a nationwide plantation drive under the aegis of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' and planted around 1.25 lakh saplings in one day through simultaneous plantations at 114 identified locations. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, launched this day-long initiative in Nagpur.
The NHAI's goal is to plant 75 lakh trees by August 15, 2022, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India's independence. Gadkari stated in his address that the ministry has been focusing on tree planting and transplantation. Geotagging these saplings is also being prioritized so that the progress and growth of these plants can be tracked.
He also encouraged people to come forward and participate in this programme in order for the plantation drive to have a long-term and sustainable impact.
Dr. V.K. Singh, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways and Civil Aviation, and NHAI Chairperson also planted saplings at a function held in Dasna, Ghaziabad.
In his speech, Singh stated that, in accordance with the Prime Minister's vision, we have been working to create a viable and sustainable ecosystem, and that this plantation drive will go a long way in enhancing the environment.
NHAI Chairperson Alka Upadhyaya stated that the NHAI has been working diligently not only to create a world-class National Highway network, but also to sustain the environment. The Chairperson also stated that the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' has put a lot of emphasis on afforestation and the establishment of 'Amrit Sarovars' across India to recharge and rejuvenate the water bodies along National Highways.
The drive saw active participation from public representatives, local civil society members, NGOs, college students, and women Self Help Groups (SHGs) from various states in spreading the message of environmental sustainability.
Under the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,' the NHAI has undertaken numerous initiatives, including plantation drives and the establishment of ponds or 'Amrit Sarovars' near National Highways that helps to rejuvenate water bodies and ground water.
