PepsiCo & Walmart Announce Regenerative Agriculture Plan

PepsiCo and Walmart have unveiled a fresh collaborative initiative with the goal of making significant investments in the practice of regenerative agriculture within the United States and Canada.

PepsiCo and Walmart have announced a 7-year partnership, committing $120 million to support farmers in the United States and Canada. Their primary focus is to improve soil health and water quality through various programs. Their goal is to promote regenerative farming practices on over 2 million acres of agricultural land.

This initiative is expected to reduce and remove approximately 4 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, equivalent to powering 778,300 homes for a year. Farmers, like Jeff Huffman of Island Farms LLC, highlight the importance of regenerative agriculture, as it benefits the environment, food quality, and farm profitability by reducing inputs and increasing crop yields while conserving resources.

PepsiCo and Walmart, both reliant on farmers for their products, recognize the varying sustainability challenges within North American agriculture due to different crops, regions, and farms. Their partnership promotes an adaptable, voluntary approach to regenerative agriculture that acknowledges the diversity in the industry. Jim Andrew, PepsiCo's Chief Sustainability Officer, stressed the importance of trust in achieving sustainability goals. He highlighted the need for financial support, social and cultural backing, and agronomic assistance for regenerative agriculture to succeed. The strategic partnership with Walmart reflects their shared commitment to supporting farmers in improving farming practices for the benefit of the planet and future generations.

Their "pep+" (PepsiCo Positive) objectives include promoting regenerative agriculture practices on 7 million acres by 2030 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 40% across their entire value chain by 2030, with a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. This partnership underscores the alignment of these two industry giants in their commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Walmart's participation in this partnership underscores its dedication to purposeful collaborations aligned with its objective to conserve, restore, or more sustainably manage 50 million acres of land and 1 million square miles of ocean by 2030, in accordance with the Walmart Foundation's mission. Together, PepsiCo and Walmart are striving to create a meaningful impact on sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and the well-being of farmers, while also driving change across the industry.
