The Central Government is all set to disburse more than Rs 19,000 crore in to the bank accounts of over 9.5 crore farmers under its ambitious scheme - Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana on Friday (14 May 2021). This is said to be the highest amount to be paid under PM Kisan on a single day.

West Bengal farmers will get the very first installment of PM-Kisan on Friday. The Centre had transferred the last installment of Rs 18,000 crore on 25th December 2020. Although the total number of farmers registered under the scheme is 10.5 crore, the Government has accepted data of 9.5 crore after removing ineligible Annadata’s and enforcing mandatory Aadhaar authentication.

PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana was launched in February 2019 to provide income support to farmers, cost the exchequer around Rs 1,241 crore in 2019; Rs 48,714 crore in 2020 and Rs 65,000 crore in (RE) financial year 2021. Finance minister has kept the allocation unchanged for FY22 at Rs 65,000 crore.

Under PM Kisan Yojana, each land-owning farmer receives Rs 6,000 every year in 3 equal instalments of Rs 2,000 each as direct income support. The current payment to be distributed on 14 May is for April-July period.

An agriculture ministry official said that “The scheme is meant to help farmers partially meet the expenses on fertilisers & seeds before kharif sowing season that starts from 1 June.  If West Bengal government agrees to authenticate & signs off the 7.5 lakh farmers data, registered & validated so far, they will also get the first installment”.

After winning state assembly elections for 3rd consecutive term, chief minister Mamata Banerjee agreed to join PM-Kisan yojana for the benefit of farmers in the state. Prime minister Narendra Modi had also promised the farmers to pay all previous instalments of PM Kisan if BJP was voted to power.

Official sources said that though 14 farmers are eligible for PM-Kisan yojana as per the agricultural census of 2015-16 but the number of actual beneficiaries can be much lower, may be not more than 12 crore.
