In Andhra Pradesh, tomato prices have slipped to 30-70 paise/kg, putting farmers in a big crisis. The Pathikonda Agriculture Market Committee (APMC) witnessed the lowest price of tomato on Thursday at the popular tomato market in the Rayalseema area of Andhra Pradesh.
Tomato prices crashed to the lowest of 30-70 paise per kilogram in the season.
Anantapur and Kurnool farmers stated that they have spent around Rs 30,000 per acre in tomatoes and pesticides, transferring the produce to the market, and are now only able to gain less than Re 1/kg.
The frustrated farmers challenged the scheme and stated how a farmer could live and feed his family in such a situation.
Blaming the situation on market officials, farmers also organized a rally. Nevertheless, the market management said that 150 tons of tomatoes were arranged in the yard on Thursday, which contributed to the price collapse.
A fine variety of tomatoes has been cultivated to a large extent by farmers in Pathikonda, Alur, Aspari and some other regions, and recent rains due to cyclones have further led to a bumper crop. With the collapse in rates, this has now led to a crisis.
