All You Need to Know About Agastya Plant

Agastya plant is a Leafy vegetable that contains natural iodine. Iodine can be found in many other things, but it is most easily obtained from the spinach (Agastya plant). It is a plant with many local names. Agastya plant is also known by many names such as Agathi keerai, Agathichira, etc in South India. In Sanskrit it is known as Agasthya, Muni Drumam, and Vanga Sena. It is also known as the Vegetable Hummingbird in English.

Where can you find Agastya plant?

It is found mostly in the tropics. India is considered to be the birthplace of Agastya plant. The climate of South India is very suitable for this. It is rich in calcium, phosphorus, fat, iron, vitamins A, B, and C.

Common Varieties

In our country, white, red, yellow, and blue spinach varieties are commonly found.

It can be germinated by sowing. October-December is the best time for planting. It flowers most in February-March. Applying manure or compost as basal manure will produce a good yield for up to five years. The flower is also used for Shiva Pooja as it has many specialties. Its flowers, leaves, and bark are all medicinal.

Medical Benefits of Agastya Plant

  • Squeeze the juice of its leaves and apply it on the forehead to get rid of headaches.

  • Crushing the leaves is good for removing bruises and sprains and for quick healing of wounds.

  • Its leaves are fried in ghee and served as a remedy for eye diseases including night blindness.

  • To get rid of intermittent fever, just put the juice of its leaf in the nose.

  • A handful of leaf juice mixed with salt is good for removing excess bile.

  • Consumption of coconut and agathi leaf juice in equal proportions is best for cleansing the stomach.

  • Its seeds can be mixed with milk and applied to wounds to heal quickly.

  • Its leaves are mixed with fenugreek and heated in sesame oil and applied to the body to enhance the radiance of the body.

  • Its leaf extract can be used to clear the mouth and throat. Boiled water with its leaves is good for health.

  • It can be used in equal proportions with henna and turmeric to avoid the problem of cracked feet.
