Rajni Sekhri Sibal, I.A.S., Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India visited the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture in Chennai.
Sibal reviewed the available infrastructural facilities for initiating a national level programme on selective breeding of Penaeus indicus involving the Research Institutions, Developmental Departments, private sector and farmers on consortium mode. The secretary visited the shrimp and finfish hatchery complex located at the Muttukadu Experimental Station of ICAR-CIBA and the Penaeus indicus farming facility located in the station.
The Secretary also held an interaction meeting with the various Secretaries and Senior Officials of Fisheries Departments.
K.S. Srinivas, I.A.S., Chairman, Marine Products Exports Development Authority, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India emphasized on the importance of selective breeding of Indicus.
Earlier, Dr. K.K. Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA in his welcome address highlighted the importance of Penaeus indicus species and presented the R&D initiatives CIBA has been doing and a road map for developing a selective breeding programme on a consortium mode.
