A decade ago, encountering a peacock was considered a fortunate and rare occurrence, but now it has become a common sight. A report says that the population of peafowls in the state has surged by 150 percent since 1998.
A collaborative study involving 13 organizations, including the Wildlife Institute and the World Wildlife Fund, uncovered a significant finding about peacocks. The study relied on data gathered by 30,000 bird enthusiasts using the e-bird system. In the past, peacocks were limited to specific regions like Idukki, Wayanad, Palakkad, and Thrissur districts, but they are now distributed throughout the state.
Peacocks are traditionally found in dry, rocky, and bushy areas. Dr. P.O. Namir from the Kerala Agricultural University Wildlife Department suggests that the growing peacock population may be a natural response to Kerala's changing climate. The designation of peacocks as the national bird in 1963, along with strengthened efforts in forest and wildlife conservation, has contributed to their population increase.
According to research, 19 per cent of Kerala's land area now provides favourable habitat for peacocks, and this is projected to increase to 40 per cent by 2050. The proliferation of peacocks poses a threat to agricultural crops. Abundant food sources like rice and vegetables, coupled with dry conditions, contribute to their population growth. Additionally, the presence of wild boars, for which there are no provisions for control, poses another threat to the state. While peacocks themselves don't cause drought, their crop destruction is already proving to be a significant challenge for farmers, creating a new crisis in the agricultural sector.
