Water-grown plants are absolute beauties that thrive in nothing but a vase filled with water, making them perfect for beginners and anyone looking for a low-maintenance way to add greenery to their home. After all who does not want to wake up and feel nature around them?!

Growing plants in water, also known as hydroponics, might seem counterintuitive. After all, are not plants supposed to get their nutrients from soil? The answer is yes, but roots can also absorb nutrients dissolved in water. Water-grown plants rely on this principle, with the added benefit of allowing you to easily monitor water levels and prevent overwatering, a common houseplant killer.

Plant Power: How They Survive Without Soil

Water-grown plants have adapted ways to absorb oxygen and nutrients directly from the water. Some, like pothos and philodendrons, develop specialized aerial roots that help them take in oxygen from the air. Others, like lucky bamboo, have root systems that efficiently absorb nutrients and water directly from the surrounding liquid.

Plants: Choose from our list below, or explore other water-friendly varieties like spider plants or peace lilies.

Containers: Always choose transparent glass containers so you can monitor root growth. Vases, mason jars, or decorative bowls all work well.

Water: Use filtered or tap water that has sat out for 24 hours to allow chlorine and fluoride to dissipate, which can harm some plants.

Optional: Liquid fertilizer specifically formulated for hydroponics can be added to the water occasionally for a nutrient boost. After all a little maintenance is much needed.

Planting and Care Tips

Propagate or Purchase: You can grow water-grown plants from cuttings of existing plants or purchase them already established in water.

Prepare the Plant: If using a cutting, remove the lower leaves to expose the stem where roots will develop.

Fill the Container: Add enough water to submerge the nodes (the bumpy areas on the stem) but leave the leaves above the waterline.

Placement: Choose a location with bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, which can heat the water and damage the roots.

Water Changes: Refresh the water every 1-2 weeks, or sooner if it becomes cloudy or discolored. Top up with fresh water as needed to maintain the water level.

Fertilizing: Add a few drops of hydroponic fertilizer to the freshwater during water changes, following the product's instructions.

6 Easy Water-Growing Plants for Your Home

Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana): This elegant plant with its twisted stalks is a popular choice for water gardens. It is low-maintenance and thrives in a variety of lighting conditions. It is also associated with good luck and prosperity.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum): This fast-growing vine with cascading foliage is known for its air-purifying properties and adaptability to various light levels.

Monstera Deliciosa (Swiss Cheese Plant): While a mature monstera might need soil support, younger plants with fewer, smaller leaves can thrive in water for quite some time. Just ensure the nodes are submerged.

Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema): This low-light tolerant plant comes in a variety of vibrant colors and patterns. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller spaces.

Philodendron (Philodendron spp.): Like pothos, philodendrons offer a wide range of varieties with stunning foliage. Choose a variety that suits your light conditions and enjoy its lush growth in water.

English Ivy (Hedera helix): This trailing vine with cascading foliage is another air-purifying champion. Keep in mind that English Ivy can be toxic to pets, so place it strategically if you have furry friends.

With their low-maintenance needs and beautiful aesthetics, water-grown plants are a fantastic option for anyone looking to add a touch of green to their home. So, choose your favorites and give it a try!
