The term "guru" originates from Sanskrit and is a combination of two words. The word "gu" refers to darkness or ignorance, while "ru" signifies a dispeller.

Thus, a guru is a spiritual leader, teacher, or mentor who guides individuals towards enlightenment, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness or ignorance.

Guru Purnima 2023: Date and Time

Guru Purnima, also referred to as 'Vyas Purnima' is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Ashadha, which typically falls between June and July in the Gregorian calendar.

In the current year, Guru Purnima will be celebrated on July 3 i.e., today, with the Purnima Tithi commencing on July 2 at 08:21 PM and concluding on July 3 at 05:08 PM.

Gautam Buddha, the founder of the Buddhist faith, delivered his inaugural sermon after attaining enlightenment under the sacred Bodhi tree for a period of five weeks. Journeying from Bodhgaya to Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, Gautam Buddha chose the occasion of the full moon day to impart his profound teachings.

Guru Purnima 2023: Do's and Don'ts

Do's:

-Grateful Hearts: Express heartfelt appreciation and sincere gratitude towards the teachers, mentors, and gurus who have guided and supported you along your journey.

- Sacred Offerings: Dedicate time to offer prayers and seek blessings from your revered gurus, recognizing the profound wisdom they have imparted and their profound impact on your life.

- Inner Reflection: Utilize this auspicious occasion for introspection, contemplating your spiritual path, and setting intentions for further growth and progress

- Acts of Service: Engage in selfless acts of service or Seva as a humble gesture of respect towards your teachers and as a means to positively contribute to society.

- Fasting or Moderation: Consider observing a fast or practicing moderation as an expression of self-discipline and devotion on this sacred day.

- Spiritual Engagements: Participate in spiritual activities such as attending satsangs, discourses, or gatherings that provide opportunities to immerse yourself in the teachings and profound wisdom of your revered guru.

Don'ts-

- Reverential Attitude: Foster an attitude of respect and humility towards your gurus and fellow seekers, fostering an environment of harmony and inclusiveness.

- Letting go of Ego: Cultivate humility and release any tendencies towards ego-driven behavior that may impede your spiritual growth.

- Cherish the Teachings: Acknowledge and uphold the teachings and wisdom imparted by your gurus and ancestors, honouring their profound guidance and preserving the valuable legacy they have passed down.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has greeted everyone on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said:

“समस्त देशवासियों को गुरु पूर्णिमा की अनंत शुभकामनाएं।”

Guru Purnima 2023: Puja Vidhi and Rituals

According to Gurudev Shrie Kashyap, on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, it is recommended to wake up early, cleanse oneself with a bath, and engage in ritualistic worship or pooja.

Following the pooja, it is advised to offer flowers to the deities and present prasad as an offering. Gurudev also suggests chanting the Guru Mantra and expressing heartfelt gratitude to our masters for their priceless guidance and wisdom throughout our lives.
