Hariyali Teej 2023: Significance, Celebration and Do’s and Don’ts of Fasting

Hariyali Teej, observed on August 19 this year, is a celebration that pays tribute to the persistent devotion of goddess Parvati to lord Shiva. It signifies the belief that goddess Parvati underwent 108 incarnations to attain Lord Shiva as her spouse.

Hariyali Teej is a vibrant and auspicious Hindu festival celebrated by women, signifying the arrival of the monsoon season and symbolizing the union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

This festival falls on the third day of Shravan's bright lunar fortnight, known as Tritiya Tithi. This year, Hariyali Teej falls on August 19, married women observe a fast, praying for their husbands' long lives and well-being. Unmarried women also participate in the fast, hoping to find a life partner similar to Lord Shiva.

Hariyali Teej 2023: Celebration

During Hariyali Teej, Hindu women engage in various customs to seek blessings for their husband’s long life from Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati. This includes partaking in a day-long fast, adorning their hands with Mehendi, donning new attire in shades of green or red, embellishing themselves with jewellery, and more. A significant aspect involves crafting new swings and singing folk songs that celebrate the affection between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The observance of the festival extends to married women, newlyweds, and unmarried women who all have the option to fast. Additionally, in accordance with traditions, parents send gifts to their daughters' homes for Teej. These gifts typically encompass homemade sweets, ghewar (a traditional sweet), henna, and bangles.

Hariyali Teej 2023: Do’s and Don’ts of Fasting

  • On this special day, it's advised to focus on cleanliness. Try your best to avoid getting angry and let go of any feelings of jealousy.

  • Dress in traditional attire like sarees or salwar suits. The colour green symbolizes long life, good health, and happiness in marriage, while red represents strength, love, and dedication.

  • Remember that fasting is meaningful when done with wholehearted dedication and devotion. Don't let negative emotions take over.

  • During the Hariyali Teej fast, stay calm and worship Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Interact with others lovingly and avoid anger.

  • According to religious beliefs, women observe the Hariyali Teej fast by refraining from eating or drinking throughout the day. Pregnant or unwell women are allowed to have fruits and water, based on family rituals.

  • For those observing the fast, staying awake during the day is important. Keep your mind devoted to worship and focus on prayers to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

  • During the puja ritual, offer and distribute dishes like puris, laddoos, halwa, and fresh fruits as prasad.

  • The term "Hariyali" in Hariyali Teej signifies nature. It suggests that Goddess Parvati represents Mother Nature. It's crucial to protect the environment and not litter roads or bodies of water.
