National Youth Day 2023: Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, also known as National Youth Day, is observed to mark the anniversary of the birth of Swami Vivekananda, one of the country's most important spiritual figures. He was a philosopher, monk, and teacher who was important to both the revival of Hinduism in India and the campaign for Indian independence. Swami Vivekananda is also renowned for his contributions to education and his initiatives to empower Indian youth. His ideas on spirituality, nationalism and education are still important today and have a significant influence on Indian youth.

History of National Youth Day

On January 12, National Youth Day is observed to recognize Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary. Since 1985, Vivekananda's teachings have been honored and recognized on Swamiji's birth anniversary, which the Indian government designated as National Youth Day in 1984. The topic for National Youth Day 2023 is "Viksit Yuva-Viksit Bharat" this year.

National Youth Day is observed in India to raise awareness and disseminate information about human rights. The primary goal of the festival is to inspire young people and preserve Swami Vivekananda's beliefs. On National Youth Day (Rashtriya Yuva Diwas), a variety of events are held around the country, including speeches, music, youth conventions, seminars, yoga asanas, presentations, essay writing, recitation competitions, and sporting events.

National Youth Day 2023 will have the theme "Viksit Yuva Viksit Bharat." The topic unmistakably highlights the significance of creating a progressive youth population that would ultimately carry India's achievements forward. To inspire youngsters to pursue education, logical thought, and religious empathy, National Youth Day is observed.

About Swami Vivekananda's life

Swami Vivekananda was motivated by his mother's devoutness as a housewife and his father's logical reasoning as a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court when he was a little boy. He was born in Calcutta as Narendranath Datta into a Bengali family. Since his early years, they have all influenced how he thinks and shaped his personality. In 1984, he received his degree from Scottish Church College.

In the meanwhile, he encountered Ramakrishna and joined his discipleship, which ultimately transformed his life. In 1988, he adopted the Hindu monk's nomadic lifestyle and became Parivrajaka. Later, he gave several talks in the West on Hinduism and Indian philosophy.

On the occasion of his birthday, let's consider some of the life teachings that Swami Vivekananda imparted to us:

"The more we come out and do good to others, the more our hearts will be purified."

Swami Vivekananda held that serving others is the way to self-purification. He exhorted individuals to perform acts of unselfish service and to contribute to improving society. He advocated the idea that the more we give to others, the more our hearts and minds might become pure.

"Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached."

He encouraged us to never give up on our dreams and ambitions. To succeed, he pushed individuals to be tenacious and persistent in their endeavours. He firmly believed that everything we set our minds to, we can accomplish by being unwavering and persistent.
