World Chocolate Day commemorates the arrival of chocolate in Europe in the 1550s. While the details remain fuzzy, historians believe that Spanish explorer Hernan Cortes encountered the bitter Aztec beverage "xocolat" during his travels in the early 16th century. Intrigued, he brought the drink back to Spain, sparking a love affair that would sweep across Europe.

Initially, European palates found xocolat unpalatable due to its bitterness. Enterprising individuals began experimenting by adding sugar, milk, and spices, transforming the beverage into a sweeter, more familiar treat. This marked the beginning of chocolate's evolution into the beloved confection we know today.

The journey did not stop there. In 1828, a Dutch chemist took chocolate a step further by inventing solid chocolate. The true turning point arrived in the mid-19th century. In 1847, JS Fry & Sons in Britain crafted the first chocolate bar, using cocoa butter, cocoa powder, and sugar. This innovation paved the way for the booming chocolate industry we see today.
