The wholesale prices of tur rose across the benchmark markets, according to the data from the Agmarknet portal run by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The fall in production is the major reason behind this rise.

The month-on-month average wholesale prices of tur, in March, increased by Rs 121.29 to Rs 9,580.08 per quintal. Among all the regions, Rajasthan saw the highest increase of around 16.8% to Rs 5,918 per quintal, followed by Madhya Pradesh with an 8.2% increase to Rs 9,284.

Other states and union territories where the wholesale prices of tur increased are Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and West Bengal. In West Bengal, the prices increased by 4.5% to Rs 9,175 and in Gujarat by around 2% to Rs 9,824. In Maharashtra and Karnataka, the prices rose marginally by around 0.9% to Rs 9,612 and by 0.12% to Rs 10,126, respectively.

However, the wholesale prices fell in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh. In Delhi, the prices slumped by almost 18% to Rs 7,000 per quintal, followed by around 14.2% to Rs 8,579.

As of Sunday, the year-on-year retail price of tur dal rose to Rs 150.28 per kg in 2014 from 113.43 in 2023. To control the market prices, in December 2023, the government extended the free import policy for tur and urad dal until March 2025. India imports tur from Mozambique, Australia, Canada, and Myanmar.
