As the summer of 2024 breaks records in temperature rise protecting your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation is paramount. But are the regular SPFs enough to beat this heat?

The Northern parts of India are already experiencing extreme temperatures soaring above 50 degrees Celsius. In such intense heat, choosing the right SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is important. Be mindful about your skin and safeguard it from sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.

SPF measures the level of protection a sunscreen provides against UVB rays, the primary cause of sunburn and skin cancer. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection.

SPF 30: Blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays.

SPF 50: Blocks approximately 98% of UVB rays.

SPF 100: Blocks approximately 99% of UVB rays.

While no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, higher SPFs offer better protection, especially in extreme conditions.

Suitable SPF for Extreme Heat:

For the scorching summer of 2024, especially in regions where temperatures exceed 50 degrees Celsius, an SPF of 50 or higher is highly recommended.

This level of protection is essential to prevent severe sunburn and long-term skin damage. Sunscreens with SPF 50+ are designed to offer a robust defense against intense UV radiation, making them suitable for prolonged outdoor work in extreme heat.

4 Sunscreen Tips for Extreme Heat:

  1. Apply Generously and Evenly

With the heat snarling at us, it is important to build our skin defenses. Apply sunscreen generously and evenly to all exposed skin. Most people do not use enough sunscreen, significantly reducing its effectiveness. For full-body coverage, use about an ounce (a shot glass full) of sunscreen.

  1. Reapply Frequently

Sweating can reduce the effectiveness of sunscreen. In intense heat, reapply sunscreen every two hours, and immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Water-resistant sunscreens can provide additional protection, but they still need to be reapplied regularly.

  1. Choose Broad-Spectrum Protection

Ensure your sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection, meaning it shields against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, contributing to premature aging and long-term skin damage, while UVB rays cause sunburn. Broad-spectrum sunscreens provide comprehensive protection against the full spectrum of UV radiation.

  1. Complement Sunscreen with Other Protective Measures

While sunscreen is essential, it should be part of broader sun protection measures. Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts (avoid dark colors), wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

By taking these important precautions, you can enjoy the summer while minimizing the risks associated with sun exposure.
