After the successful implementation of its ‘Better Life Farming’ initiative in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, Bayer has now expanded the initiative to Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. Better Life Farming aims to provide smallholder farmers with access to modern agri-inputs and farming advisory and enable additional income generation through rural agri-entrepreneurship.
'Better Life Farming' is a global multi-stakeholder alliance that works with partners across the agri-value chain to support smallholder farmers in developing economies to increase crop yields and farm incomes. The alliance has global partners that include Bayer with its expertise in seeds, crop protection & agronomy; IFC, the development finance institution for impact assessment; and Netafim for drip irrigation technologies. In India, the alliance works with additional local partners: Yara Fertilisers for soil and nutrient management; DeHaat, AgriBazaar, and Big Basket as off-takers;1 Tata Trusts for improving rural livelihoods and promoting self-reliant agri-entrepreneurship; and Axis Bank for financing.
Additionally, Bayer’s Better Life Farming initiative has promoted clusters of rural agri-entrepreneurs running their own Better Life Farming centers. Each center caters to as many as 500 farmers from 5-6 villages nearby with access to agri-inputs, crop advisory, irrigation best practices and new technologies. The centers also support aggregation & sale of farm produce and operate Better Life farms to train farmers on good agricultural practices. Further, the centers provide employment opportunities for local youth. Another key objective for Bayer is integrating women smallholders into mainstream farming, by economically and socially empowering them as farmers and entrepreneurs running their own Better Life Farming centers.

After establishing successful proof of concept in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, we are expanding our reach and expertise to smallholder farmers in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. By 2025, we aim to empower 5,000 rural agri-entrepreneurs to serve 2.5 million smallholder farmers in India”.
In Bihar, Bayer has set up six Better Life Farming centers in Katihar and Jamuee districts, in collaboration with Kakanath Farmer Producer Co. Ltd., a registered Farmer Producer Company. By the end of 2020, 50 centers will be set up in Bihar.
In Madhya Pradesh, Bayer has set up eight Better Life Farming centers and 26 Better Life farms in Chindwada district, in collaboration with Kamatan which is engaged in supporting FPOs with input supply and output procurement. Till now, 1,400 plus farmers have been trained on modern cultivation practices for pulses, cotton and corn. 20 Better Life Farming centers are planned by the end of 2020 in Seoni, Betul, Nursinghpur and Panna districts to serve 15,000 plus farmers.
In Odisha, seven Better Life Farming centers have been rolled out in Mayurbhanj district in collaboration with e-kutir, a social enterprise offering soil-to-shelf digital solutions under the brand name ‘Bloom’. 13 Better Life Farming centers are planned by the end of 2020 along with 25 Better Life farms.
In West Bengal, Bayer has set up a Better Life Farming center in Bankura district in collaboration with Shamayita Math, a social organization supporting 36,000+ families in the state on topics of agriculture, health, capacity building and women empowerment. Bayer plans to set up 20 Better Life farms and 20 Farming centers in the state with an aim to serve 10,000+ farmers.
Better Farms, Better Lives
In June, Bayer introduced a new global initiative – ‘Better Farms, Better lives’ to support smallholder farmers tide over the immediate challenges due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Through this initiative, Bayer is supporting 20 lakh smallholder farmers in Asia, Africa and Latin America, with farming kits containing Bayer’s hybrid seeds, crop protection products, personal protective equipment and safety & training materials. In India, the initiative has supported 4, 00,000 smallholder farmers across 17 states, spanning key crops such as rice, corn, vegetables and millet.
By 2030, Bayer is committed to helping more than 100 million smallholder farmers in developing countries as part of its global sustainability commitments.
