Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, commemorated National Farmers Day 2024 by participating in the Kisan Samman Diwas and the Farmers and Rural Development Beneficiaries Conference at the ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute in Pune, Maharashtra. In his address, Chouhan emphasized the government's significant efforts to empower rural communities, provide housing for all, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin Plus (+), Chouhan announced that 13.29 lakh houses have been approved for Maharashtra for the financial year 2024-25. With a total target of constructing 19.66 lakh houses in the state, an estimated expenditure of Rs 29,501 crore has been earmarked. Chouhan lauded Maharashtra for being the first state to receive the largest housing construction target. The scheme now extends to individuals previously excluded due to outdated eligibility criteria, including those owning two-wheelers or earning up to Rs 15,000 monthly.
Chouhan also stressed the government's dedication to women empowerment through self-help groups. He revealed a nationwide target of creating 3 crore “Lakhpati Didis,” with 1.15 crore women already achieving this status. These groups play a pivotal role in boosting the rural economy.
Focusing on agricultural development, Chouhan drew attention to the exponential growth in the agricultural budget under the Modi government, which increased from Rs 23,000 crore during the UPA regime to Rs 1.27 lakh crore. A subsidy of Rs 1.94 lakh crore has also been provided across 45 programs. Additionally, the launch of 109 new crop seed varieties by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was highlighted as a crucial step towards promoting natural farming practices and enhancing productivity.
Chouhan urged the adoption of natural farming under the Natural Agriculture Mission, emphasizing the importance of reducing pesticide use and preserving biodiversity. He also called for technological innovations in irrigation to maximize efficiency and minimize water usage. The government, he noted, is tirelessly working to enhance storage capacities and reduce production costs for farmers.
The event, graced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, state ministers, and senior officials, showcased the government’s dedication to uplifting rural communities. With continued efforts to double farmers’ income and promote sustainable agriculture, the conference underscored the administration’s commitment to a prosperous and self-reliant rural India.
