Dr. Jitendra Singh Unveils Namoh 108 Lotus Variety Developed by CSIR-NBRI

The flower, named 'NBRI Namoh 108', was developed by the prestigious CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), situated in Lucknow.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, as well as MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, unveiled a remarkable new variety of lotus flower with 108 petals in a significant development in the field of botanical research.

The unveiling ceremony took place at the NBRI campus, where Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the religious and symbolic significance of both the lotus flower and the number 108. He expressed that this fusion of the two elements gave a distinct and important identity to the new variety. The ‘Namoh 108’ lotus variety boasts a prolonged flowering period, spanning from March to December, and is characterized by its rich nutrient content

One of the most noteworthy features of this newly introduced lotus variety is that its entire genome has been sequenced, making it the first lotus variety to have undergone such comprehensive genetic analysis. This genetic sequencing will allow scientists and researchers to better understand the characteristics and traits of this unique flower.

The occasion also marked the release of a range of products derived from the 'Namoh 108' lotus variety. These products included apparel crafted from lotus fiber and a perfume named ‘Frotus’, which is extracted from the lotus flowers. The development of these products was part of the Lotus Research Programme conducted in collaboration with FFDC, Kannauj.

Commending the CSIR-NBRI for bestowing the name 'Namoh 108' upon this distinctive lotus variety, Dr. Jitendra Singh viewed it as a significant tribute to the enduring dedication and innate beauty of Prime Minister Modi. This unveiling coincided with the tenth year of Prime Minister Modi's tenure, adding a sense of commemoration to the occasion.

Additionally, the event marked the launch of the Lotus Mission, a comprehensive endeavor aimed at advancing research and innovation in the realm of lotus-based products and applications. Dr. Jitendra Singh likened this mission to other priority schemes, highlighting the government's commitment to fostering development in various sectors. He emphasized that, under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi, initiatives like the Lotus Mission were meticulously planned to ensure their effectiveness and impact.

Among the other intriguing unveilings, Dr. Jitendra Singh introduced herbal colors extracted from flower offerings made at temples. These herbal colors have diverse applications, including dyeing silk and cotton fabrics. Furthermore, a novel variety of Aloe vera named ‘NBRI-Nihar’ was presented, boasting substantially higher gel yield compared to regular Aloe vera strains. This variety also displayed resilience against bacterial and fungal diseases.

The ceremony witnessed the launch of various herbal products, including 'Herbal Cold Drops' for treating common coughs and colds, as well as 'Herbal Anti Dandruff Hair Oil'. These products, developed by Marc Laboratories, aimed to leverage the potential of herbal remedies.

Amidst the array of announcements, Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the NBRI-Goutout, a supplement designed to aid individuals dealing with gout or gouty arthritis. Additionally, a Nutri-bar catering to the nutritional requirements of army personnel stationed in high-altitude regions was also introduced. Dr. Jitendra Singh's visit coincided with a six-day event organized by the CSIR-NBRI from August 14 to 19, 2023. The event showcased the institute's cutting-edge research, products, technologies, and expertise to a wide range of stakeholders, underscoring its commitment to innovation and advancement.

Prior to the unveiling ceremony, Dr. Ajit Kumar Shasany, the Director of NBRI, extended a warm welcome to Dr. Jitendra Singh. He praised the Minister for supporting the initiative 'One Week One Lab', which has played a pivotal role in showcasing the achievements of CSIR on a grand scale.

To commemorate the occasion, an exhibition dedicated to nutra-central original byproducts was inaugurated, with Dr. Jitendra Singh personally exploring each stall and engaging in discussions about the various facets of these innovative products.
