Farmers in Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir have set an example for fellow cultivators by successfully commissioning a lift irrigation system on Sigdi-Chatroo river to support their horticultural setups and hybrid walnut nurseries. The district administration is helping the farmers and orchardists with technical and financial support to draw water from the Sigdi-Chatroo River for irrigating their orchards and hybrid walnut nurseries.

Since the total project cost was substantial, a major share was funded by the Kishtwar district administration under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and other agriculture schemes, while the remaining contribution was made by the farmer.

The technical backup involved using 18mm steel wire and 50mm High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes to cross the rivers, drilling holes, and erecting pillars on both sides.

As a result of the twin efforts of the authorities and farmers, now high-value crops grow in the area, not only boosting yields but also enhancing the farmers' income, improving food security, and stimulating local economies.

This achievement has inspired other farmers too to adopt similar practices, leading to overall agricultural development and sustainability in the region.
