The G20 Research Innovation and Initiative Gathering (RIIG) Conference recently took place, focusing on scientific challenges and opportunities for a sustainable blue economy. During the conference, representatives from various nations discussed the importance of sharing best practices and policy models to promote sustainable development in the maritime sector.
In his opening speech, Dr. S. Chandrasekhar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology and Chair of G20-RIIG, highlighted India's comprehensive plan for coastal area development. This plan includes initiatives to transform the blue economy, enhance coastal infrastructure, and protect marine ecosystems.
Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, emphasized that ocean resources are not bound by international borders, stressing the collective responsibility of all countries to preserve and sustainably utilize these resources. He also highlighted India's recent efforts in advancing the National Blue Economy, such as the Deep Ocean Mission and the Maritime India Vision 2030.
During the conference, an exhibition titled "India's journey to the G20" was inaugurated by Administrator Diu Praful Khoda Patel and G20 India Sherpa Amitabh Kant. Amitabh Kant discussed the challenges faced by the ocean environment and stressed the need for enhanced international cooperation to build a sustainable future. Praful Patel shared his vision of economic well-being through efficient research and innovation.
The conference covered a wide range of topics related to the blue economy, including sectors and opportunities, ocean observation and data services, marine ecosystems and pollution, blue economy management, coastal and marine spatial planning, marine biodiversity, deep-sea ocean technology, and policy perspectives. The meeting, which took place in Diu and concluded on May 18, 2023, saw the participation of 35 foreign delegates and 40 Indian experts and invitees from various scientific departments and organizations of the Government of India. The conference was chaired by Dr. S. Chandrasekhar and coordinated by Dr. M. Ravichandran.
As part of the conference, the Indian Presidency presented the initial draft of the Research Ministers' declaration, which will be discussed further during the Research Ministers' meeting scheduled to be held in Mumbai on July 5, 2023. The final Ministerial Declaration will outline the agreed-upon strategies and commitments regarding research and innovation for the equitable society.
Several G20 countries and international organizations actively participated in the conference, including Brazil, Indonesia, Australia, Japan, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, the United States of America, the European Union, Spain, Singapore, Norway, and the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
