The Tamil Nadu government has launched a Green Fellowship programme to actively involve youngsters in climate change adaptation and mitigation activities.

In September 2021, the administration stated in the Assembly that the Chief Minister's Green Fellowship Programme will be implemented in 38 districts. The government has allocated 6 crores for the scheme. Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Climate Change, and Forests Department, issued an order to this effect.

The objective of the “Green Fellowship programme”

The programme's objective is to involve youngsters in the development and implementation of environmental policies. They will track and assess the results, convey the influence of policies, and provide improved services.

Roles & Responsibilities

The associate will also assist district administrations in properly implementing the plastic ban, encouraging the use of cloth bags, and promoting eco-alternatives. In addition, they will perform quantitative and qualitative research to create evidence to guide environmental policymaking.

Eligibility For “Green Fellowship programme”

Candidates that are interested in applying can do so online. They will be called in for an interview. Postgraduate degree holders, ideally in life and environmental sciences/MBA with a score of 60%, and degree holders in any subject with a minimum of two years work experience, who are under the age of 30 (as of May 1, 2022), are eligible to apply.

The ability to communicate in Tamil is required.

Salary & Perks

There will be 40 green fellows in total, one in each district and two at the state level. It will be a full-time commitment for two years from the date of the beginning, with a salary of 60,000 and a monthly travel allowance of 15,000 They will be given a laptop as well as an internet dongle.
