The government has finalised the 'Vibrant Villages Programme,' a centrally-sponsored scheme for the comprehensive development of border villages, said Minister of State for Home Affairs Nisith Pramanik in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on March 14.

The programme aims to develop villages in 46 border blocks of 19 districts in four states and one union territory bordering the northern border: Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and Ladakh (UT).

For the fiscal years 2022-23 to 2025-26, a fund of Rs 4,800 crore has been set aside for the programme.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 662 border villages have been identified as a priority for comprehensive development under the programme. The number of villages in each state is as follows: Arunachal Pradesh- 455, Himachal Pradesh- 75, Ladakh(UT)- 35, Sikkim- 46 and Uttarakhand-51

Economic growth- livelihood generation, road connectivity, housing and village infrastructure, energy, including renewable energy through solar and wind power, television and telecom connectivity, including the establishment of an IT-enabled Common Service Centre in the village, eco-system regeneration, promotion of tourism and culture, financial inclusion, skill development, and entrepreneurs are among the intervention areas identified for this programme.

The Vibrant Villages Programme seeks to bring together existing Central and State government schemes through the development of a District Convergence Plan.

It tends to focus on projects in identified intervention areas for inclusion in the vibrant villages action plan for selected villages.
