Thunderstorms with lightning, rainstorms, and hailstorm are expected to continue across areas of north, northeast, and east India over the next five days, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). On April 19, the current weather predicts isolated thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and hail in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. A similar weather pattern is expected for Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Uttarakhand on April 20 and April 21.

IMD also highlighted the impact of the harsh weather and recommended a list of precautionary measures for people to take in order to be safe during this time and avoid any human tragedy.

Among the impact predicted by IMD are:

  • Hail can cause injury to people and livestock in open areas.

  • Strong winds may cause partial damage to vulnerable structures.

  • Kutcha houses/walla and huts have minor damage.

  • Loose items may fly.

Among the preventive measures suggested by IMD are:

  • If at all possible, stay inside, close windows and doors, and avoid travel.

  • Find shelter in a safe location; do not take shelter under a tree.

  • Avoid lying on concrete floors or leaning against concrete walls.
