ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), in collaboration with the Reliance Foundation, launched a free voice message service on January 13, 2025 to empower the fishing community. The service aims to deliver critical information on sea and boat safety, hygienic fish handling, and value-added fish products directly to the mobile phones of fishermen.

Dr. George Ninan, Director of ICAR-CIFT, inaugurated the program, emphasizing its role in supporting the fishing sector with science-backed solutions.  Leveraging the expertise of ICAR-CIFT scientists, the voice messages will be provided at no cost through the Reliance Foundation, ensuring seamless access to valuable knowledge.

Nafas K. Nasar, Cluster Manager at the Reliance Foundation, stated that the service is set to benefit nearly 60,000 fishermen across six coastal districts of Kerala. This initiative is designed to enhance the safety, hygiene, and economic opportunities of fishermen by equipping them with timely updates.

Coordinated by the Extension, Information, and Statistics Division of ICAR-CIFT, the program addresses the pressing need for reliable, localized information in the fishing industry. By integrating technology with practical expertise, the service aims to promote sustainable fishing practices and improve livelihoods.

Fishermen across six coastal districts of Kerala can now receive crucial updates designed to address their safety, hygiene, and livelihood needs.

This voice service significantly enhances the fishing community's access to important information, helping them better navigate challenges in the ever-changing maritime environment.
