A tiny goat from a small farm in Kerala has made big news around the world. Karumbi, a four-year-old Canadian pygmy goat, has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s shortest living goat. Measuring just 40.50 cm (1 ft 3 in) tall, Karumbi now holds the record, verified on January 18, 2025.

Born sometime in 2021, Karumbi is a tiny, black female from the Canadian pygmy breed, known for its stocky build and genetic dwarfism that limits leg growth to no more than 21 inches (53 cm). Even at full maturity, Karumbi measures just 1.1 feet (33.5 cm) in body length, making her a true miniature marvel.

Karumbi lives on a farm owned by Peter Lenu, a farmer who has raised animals his entire life. Coming from an agricultural family, Peter looks after a lively farm with 15 goats, along with cows, rabbits, hens, and ducks. Karumbi lives with three male goats, nine other females, and ten kids, all with shades of black and white hair. Despite being the smallest on the farm, Karumbi is a playful and social goat, always mingling with her taller companions.

Peter was used to his pygmy goats rubbing against his legs and vying for attention, but it wasn’t until a guest commented on Karumbi’s unusually small size that he realised she might be something special. Encouraged to apply for a world record, Peter had Karumbi and her kid examined by a veterinarian to confirm their health, age, and measurements. That’s when he got the news, Karumbi was indeed record-worthy.

Peter ensures all his animals are healthy and well cared for, paying special attention to their genetic quality. The vet confirmed that Karumbi’s small stature was completely natural and healthy. Soon after, Peter received the exciting confirmation, Karumbi was officially the shortest living goat in the world.

Peter sees this recognition as more than just a personal achievement. “It’s a privilege for entire farmers and agriculturists,” he said, proud of what Karumbi’s record means for small-scale farmers. And the story doesn’t stop here, Karumbi is pregnant again, ready to welcome another tiny member into her growing family.

With this world record, Peter hopes to inspire other farmers and looks forward to welcoming Karumbi’s next little one while ensuring she receives the best care possible.
