Mission LiFE Takes Center Stage as World Environment Day 2023 Approaches

World Environment Day, observed on June 5th, serves as a platform for millions of individuals to come together and promote environmental awareness and action.

In 2023, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in India plans to celebrate this important day with a strong focus on Mission LiFE. The concept of LiFE, which stands for Lifestyle for Environment, was introduced by the Prime Minister during the 2021 UNFCCC COP26 World Leaders' Summit in Glasgow.

The Prime Minister's call to adopt sustainable lifestyle and practices has spurred a global pursuit towards this end. As part of the lead-up to the festivities, there will be mass mobilization efforts across India to promote LiFE.

1. National Museum of Natural History (NMNH):

Dr Meenakshi Karawal, Associate Professor, KIET Group of Institutions, Ghaziabad, kicked off the Mass Mobilisation for Mission LiFE on Waste Reduced (Swachhata Actions) to bring behavioural changes among the masses, in which a PPT on waste management, demonstration, and interactive session was delivered by Dr Meenakshi Karawal, Associate Professor, KIET Group of Institutions, Ghaziabad. Participants also agreed to implement the LiFE Actions.

Events by Regional Offices of NMNH:

On 05.05.2023, RMNH,Mysore-NMNH-MoEFCC held a Mask Making Activity for schoolchildren and the general public as part of MISSION LiFE (LIFESTYLE FOR ENVIRONMENT) and emphasised the importance of Eco-friendly LiFEstyle coupled with a Green promise.

RGRMNH, Sawai Madhopur - @NMNHIndia @moefcc hosted a #MissionLiFE orientation, Green Talk on Water Pollution, Save Water, Importance of Marine Eco System, and Climate Change. Today, around 478 students, tourists, and members of the general public actively engaged in the Exhibition on Save Water, Marine Eco-System: Ocean Life, Climate Change: Learn with Fun, and Film Shows & Selfie Corner.

2. Zoological Survey of India (ZSI):

Dr Dhriti Banerjee, Director, ZSI, conducted a virtual talk to about 100 youthful and energetic youth participants as part of the Mass Mobilization for Mission LiFE on 'Save Water' and 'Say no to Plastics' to promote awareness among the youth.

3. National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM):

Today, the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) in Chennai launched the Mission LiFE Mass Mobilization with a "Signature Campaign" and "Green Pledge" of LiFE practices.  This session was part of the World Bank Workshop on "Hydromet Service for Coastal, Agricultural, and Urban Resilience and Early Warning," which aimed to learn from the finest coastal resilience practices.

Delegations from the governments of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka attended this session and offered their knowledge of coastal management and sustainable agriculture practices. In her opening remarks, the Director of NCSCM stressed the importance of sustainable lifestyles for coastal environmental conservation and the development of a climate-resilient coastal community.

Prof. V. Geethalakshmi, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, Coimbatore, Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director, CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, Dr. S. Balachandran, Scientist-G, Head, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, MoES, Dr. Annie George, BEDROC, Kerala, and others were among the dignitaries.

Participants took part in a green pledge and a signature campaign to raise awareness about littering and the importance of living in peace with environment.
