In the 117th episode of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the transformative journey of Kalahandi, Odisha, where farmers have overcome significant challenges to create a “vegetable revolution.” Once known for forced migration due to scarce resources and water, the Golamunda block of Kalahandi has now emerged as a flourishing vegetable hub.

This remarkable transformation began with a small group of just 10 farmers who founded the ‘Kisan Utpad Sangh,’ a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), to harness modern farming techniques. Today, the FPO has grown to include over 200 farmers, including 45 women, and is achieving remarkable success.

The collective effort of these farmers has resulted in the cultivation of tomatoes on 200 acres and bitter gourd on 150 acres. Their hard work has paid off, with the annual turnover of the FPO now exceeding 1.5 crores. The vegetables produced in Kalahandi are not only sold across Odisha but have also reached other states. Additionally, farmers in Kalahandi are learning new techniques for cultivating potatoes and onions, expanding their agricultural reach.

Prime Minister Modi praised this success as a testament to what can be achieved with determination and teamwork. He encouraged people across the nation to support and join FPOs in their local areas, emphasizing that significant change can stem from humble beginnings. FPOs, which bring together small and marginal farmers, help them access markets, technology, investments, and inputs, thereby improving their agricultural practices and income.

The Government of India has recognized the potential of such organizations and has launched a scheme to promote 10,000 FPOs by 2027-28.

These organizations can be registered under the Companies Act or the Co-operative Societies Act, and they provide a platform for collective growth and empowerment.
