Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, recently embarked on a visit to Kalinga Pattinam in Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh. The purpose of the visit was to engage with shrimp farmers and gain insights into the challenges faced by those cultivating saline water shrimp at the grassroots level.
During his interaction with shrimp farmers, Dr. Likhi explored about the Bio-floc technology. This innovative and advanced culture system involves fully lined ponds set in high bio-secured conditions. The system incorporates state-of-the-art features such as auto feeders, central drainage/sludge removal, and IoT-based water parameter monitoring. These advancements aim to optimize high-density intensive farming, allowing for increased productivity within a smaller culture area and at higher stocking densities.
Srikakulam District Emerges as a Hub for Quality Shrimp Production
Srikakulam District, recognized as one of the leading shrimp-producing districts in India, has consistently maintained high shrimp quality. The unique geographical advantage of an elevated culture area distinguishes Srikakulam from other regions. This district significantly contributes to India's shrimp exports, ensuring a robust presence in international markets.
Shrimp Farms in Kalinga Pattinam
The shrimp culture area in Kalinga Pattinam alone spans over 1000 acres and is closely associated with various feed companies. Located along the Srikakulam Sea coast, these farms operate under strict bio-secured conditions. Annually, these farms produce approximately 40,000 tons of shrimp, boasting an average body weight of 20 grams.
This contributes to an estimated annual revenue of nearly Rs 10,000 crore. Engaging around 600 farmers directly and providing livelihoods to approximately 5000 people, these shrimp farms play a vital role in the economic landscape of the region. Highlighting the success of cluster farming, OWJANYA AQUATICS, a major farm situated in Tonangi village, Gara Mandal, Srikakulam District, operates across more than 1000 acres.
Owned by the progressive farmer Datla Venkata Laxmipathi Raju, this farm involves nearly 600 farmers in and around Srikakulam District, showcasing the potential of collaborative efforts in boosting shrimp production and economic prosperity.
