Southwest Monsoon Brings Rain and Storms Across Southern and Northeastern India

The varied weather patterns underscore the complexity and reach of the advancing Southwest Monsoon, necessitating preparedness across multiple regions in India.

The Southwest Monsoon has made significant progress, reaching parts of the Maldives, Comorin area, South Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands, and the South Andaman Sea. This advancement is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation over south interior Tamil Nadu and a trough extending from Madhya Maharashtra to south Tamil Nadu, leading to diverse weather patterns across India.

Rainfall and Storms Forecasted for Southern India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and Karnataka over the next seven days. Similar weather is expected in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, and Rayalaseema, though with more scattered rainfall.

Heavy rainfall is likely in Coastal Karnataka on May 19th, 20th, and 23rd, and in South Interior Karnataka on May 22nd and 23rd. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema may see heavy rains on May 19th, and Lakshadweep from May 19th to 22nd. The heaviest rains are predicted for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe on May 23rd, with extremely heavy rainfall expected in Tamil Nadu and Kerala from May 19th to 22nd.

Weather Impact in Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands for the next week, with isolated heavy rainfall over Nicobar Islands from May 20th to 23rd.

Rainfall Predictions for Central and Eastern India

Isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada from May 19th to 22nd. Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh will experience similar weather from May 19th to 23rd, while West Madhya Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh are forecasted to have such conditions on May 19th and 20th, respectively. Odisha and Bihar will also see isolated to scattered rainfall with storms from May 19th to 23rd, and Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand from May 19th to 22nd.

Northeast India to Experience Heavy Rainfall

A cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam will bring fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) to Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim for the next five days. Similar weather is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecasted for Sikkim from May 19th to 21st and Arunachal Pradesh on May 19th, with very heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya on May 19th and 20th.

A Western Disturbance over Afghanistan and north Pakistan, extending to Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, will cause isolated to scattered light rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning from May 19th to 21st. Strong surface winds (25-35 kmph) are expected in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan for the next five days.
