Sowing of Durum Wheat Variety Set to Increase in MP Due to High Global Demand

Officials said on Thursday that the sowing of durum wheat in Madhya Pradesh is expected to take place on 13 lakh hectares this Rabi season, up from 12 lakh hectares last year, amid the Russia-Ukraine war and the west scouting for imports.

Rabi crops are planted between October and December and harvested between April and June. According to some traders, the durum variety is used for porridge, semolina, and pasta and is in high demand on the international market these days.

"We expect that durum variety would be sown over 13 lakh hectares this Rabi season in MP. This was 12 lakh hectares the last time. Farmers, including those in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, are becoming interested in this grain due to higher yields and rising demand in the food processing industry, according to Dr. K C Sharma of the Indore-based Indian Agricultural Research Center.

"Durum wheat is harder than regular wheat and contains nutrients such as iron and zinc. In the midst of the war, importers are looking to India for durum," he added.

In addition, wheat export was banned in India last May due to price increases and concerns about a drop in production due to the heat wave and harsh summer.

Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Director General of Foreign Trade, stated last month that a decision on lifting the ban will be made during a crop harvest in March-April.
