Technical Committee Meeting Boosts Statistical Methodologies in Animal Husbandry and Addresses Data Gaps

The two-day meeting of the Technical Committee marks a significant step forward in enhancing the statistical framework for Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

Dr Abhijit Mitra, the Animal Husbandry Commissioner at the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, inaugurated a two-day meeting of the Technical Committee of Direction (TCD) in a major step toward improving Animal Husbandry and Dairying Statistics. The event took place today in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

The primary objectives of the Technical Committee include identifying essential data gaps and recommending suitable measures. The committee aims to deliberate on and recommend statistical methodologies to be adopted by the Centre, States/UTs.

Furthermore, it provides guidance on conducting Sample Surveys related to Animal Husbandry and Dairying. The committee is also responsible for overseeing the implementation of its recommendations.

Department's Role in Livestock Management

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying plays a pivotal role in matters related to livestock production, preservation, protection from diseases, and the improvement of stocks and dairy development. Additionally, the department oversees initiatives like the Delhi Milk Scheme (DMS) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). It serves as an advisor to State Governments and Union Territories, helping formulate policies and programs in the field of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development.

Focus Areas and Thrust of the Department

The Department's primary thrust areas include the development of infrastructure in States/UTs to enhance animal productivity. This involves the preservation and protection of livestock through the provision of healthcare. The department also focuses on strengthening central livestock farms (Cattle, Sheep, and Poultry) for developing superior germplasm, which is then distributed to states.

Committee's Decisions and Annual Data Collection

During the meeting, the Committee conducted a comprehensive review of statistics collected by States/UTs. It addressed gaps and improvement needs, resulting in important decisions, including the revision of the methodology for annual data collection.

The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of key figures in the sector, including Vikas Sitaram Bhale, Principal Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Rajasthan. Additionally, Jagat Hazarika, Advisor (Statistics) at the Department of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, and Rajendra Prasad, Director cum TCD Co-Chairman from ICAR-IASRI, were notable attendees. V P Singh, Director cum TCD Member Secretary, along with other senior members from Union and State Governments, and representatives from NDRI, NDDB, and ICAR-IASRI, also graced the occasion.

The collaboration of experts and policymakers ensures a comprehensive approach to addressing challenges and improving the overall landscape of the sector.
