Weather Update: IMD Warns of Rain and Thunderstorms in Northeast, Heatwaves in Odisha and Jharkhand, Rising Temperatures in Delhi

Rain and thunderstorms, along with rising temperatures, will affect various regions of India this week. The northeast is expecting heavy showers and snowfall, while central and southern parts of India are likely to experience heatwave conditions.

As the country transitions into spring, a dynamic weather pattern is developing across India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive forecast, highlighting a range of conditions including rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, hailstorms, and rising temperatures. Here’s a region-wise forecast of what to expect in the coming days.

Northeast India: Rainfall, Snowfall and Stormy Weather

A cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam is set to bring significant weather activity across the region.

  • Arunachal Pradesh is likely to experience scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall over the next 7 days, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph.

  • Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to see light to moderate rainfall with occasional thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph.

Eastern India: Storms and Hail Alert

A trough extending from north Chhattisgarh to Vidarbha is influencing weather over Eastern India.

  • West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha will witness isolated to scattered rainfall.

  • Gangetic West Bengal could also experience isolated hailstorms.

  • From March 19 to 23, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is expected over East Central India, with peak activity on March 20 and 21, including isolated hailstorms in West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

Temperature Forecast: Rising Heat Ahead

The IMD predicts a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3–5°C over Northwest India in the next 4-5 days. In East India, temperatures will remain stable for the next 3 days, followed by a 2–4°C drop.

Heatwave Warnings in Some Pockets

Hot weather conditions are expected to become more intense in certain regions of India.

  • Interior Odisha: Severe heatwave likely on March 18; heatwave continues in subsequent days.

  • Jharkhand, Vidarbha, and North Telangana: Heatwave conditions expected on March 18.

  • Gujarat Coast, Konkan & Goa, North Interior Karnataka: Hot and humid conditions expected till March 19.

Delhi is poised for a steady rise in temperatures with breezy conditions and partly cloudy skies.
