Though Lockdown has restricted gatherings and functions but weddings in India are still going on with masks. COVID-19 pandemic has already made the masks mandatory for each and everyone in the country. When the mask is necessary, it has become the part and parcel of the fashion while selecting the dress for the bride or the groom. The designer masks are already in the market whether it may be wedding in Assam or in Jaipur.
The designers are already introduced the masks with pearl and ornamental. Masks with pearls, masks for the ladkiwale, ladkawale ranging anywhere between Rs. 500 to Rs. 6,500 are making their way into wedding fashion.
Designer Mohit Falod has come up with ‘ornamental’ face masks. “We are using cotton as well as raw silk fabrics for masks. We are using pearls, onyx, german beads on these masks. We are getting a lot of orders and the price starts from Rs500 onwards.
It usually takes five to seven days to make masks for a couple,” he says, adding, “Masks have made their way into bridal fashion, and it will stay, at least for the next few months."
Akansha Jain has been making quirky face masks, not just for the bride and groom, but for the entire family. These masks have texts like bride, groom, ladkiwale, ladkawale, etc embroidered on them. “One doesn’t have to restrict themselves to medical disposable masks. Instead, they can now choose from a plenty of fashionable options. I am making masks with 100% cotton fabric and have interesting texts embroidered on them. A lot of couples are also having their initials embroidered on their masks,” she says.
Hanit Singh, a city-based fashion designer, says, “We have resumed our production recently, and have already got a few orders for customized face masks. We are making embroidered masks, matching the wedding outfits and the price ranges between Rs3,500 and Rs6,500. Even though the couples are opting for a smaller function, they don’t want to compromise on their looks. We are mostly making U-shaped face masks.”
Recently, an Assamese bride wearing silk handloom for her wedding went viral on the internet. The videos and images of the wedding, which happened on May 22 in Guwahati, had both the bride and the groom wearing silk handloom face masks, made of Assam’s Paat silk, matching their wedding attire. As more number of couples are opting for smaller weddings, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the trend of wearing matching face masks, particularly by the bride and groom, is catching up slowly among Jaipurites. Designers tell us that couples, who do not wish to postpone their wedding till December or next year, are opting for smaller weddings and placing orders for masks matching their wedding outfits.
