Hukumchand Dahiya, a farmer hailing from the village of Baramsar in Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan, has devoted three decades to agriculture. Despite having minimum education till 9th standard, he has mastered the art of agriculture. Dahiya manages nearly 200 bighas of land where he cultivates Isabgol, cumin, and mustard, crops that have seen a transformative evolution under his care. While these crops were part of his cultivation from the outset, their yields were initially unsatisfactory. Seeking guidance from Krishi Vigyan Kendra and conducting soil tests, he incorporated slight modifications in his farming methods, resulting in a significant upturn in production. Today, these crops yield profits in the lakhs.
Venturing into Global Markets
Dahiya divulged that apart from supplying to local markets and mandis, he has established ties with prominent companies, ensuring a seamless marketing avenue. Remarkably, he exports a portion of his produce to foreign nations, regularly providing samples to interested companies who subsequently take his produce overseas. The majority of his harvest, however, finds its place in nearby markets, contributing to his widespread reach and sales.
An Annual Earning of 25 to 30 Lakhs
Speaking on the financial aspect, Hukumchand Dahiya mentioned that he manages to produce nearly 1 quintal of Isabgol per bigha, valued at approximately Rs 120 per kilo (kg) in the market. Similarly, his cumin harvest amounts to nearly 100 kg per bigha, sold at prices ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 600 per kg. Additionally, he cultivates mustard in smaller quantities. Considering annual expenses and income, Dahiya allocates around Rs 3 lakhs for his 200 bighas of land, while the combined revenue from all crops amounts to Rs 25 to 30 lakhs annually.
Farmers - Resilient in Every Circumstance
Through Krishi Jagran, Hukumchand Dahiya shared the wisdom from his 33-year journey, emphasizing the unwavering resilience farmers must embody. Farming in their region, he articulated, is akin to challenging nature itself - a scarcity of irrigation resources coupled with unpredictable weather patterns pose continuous threats to crop yield. Nonetheless, Dahiya advocates for unwavering determination and persistence among fellow farmers, championing their resilience against adversities.
