How to Grow Big Profits in a Small Space: Inspiring Success Story of Debojit Changmai (Dhemaji, Assam)

Debojit Changmai, an innovative farmer in Dhemaji district's beautiful Mothadang area, is revolutionizing agriculture. With a unique approach that highlights less land, lower costs, and shorter cultivation periods, Changmai has achieved remarkable success. His groundbreaking methods have earned him the prestigious Pandit Deendayal Antyodaya Krishi Puraskar from the Government of India.

Changmai's 3-bigha farm is a testament to his ingenuity and dedication. Nestled within this modest area are his residence, five greenhouses, a farmer training center, a pond, and a guest house. Each component of his farm is meticulously planned to maximize efficiency and yield. The greenhouses, in particular, play a crucial role in his strategy. Changmai utilizes these controlled environments to cultivate a variety of crops throughout the year, defying traditional farming limitations.

One of Changmai's standout achievements is his approach to tomato farming. "While other farmers sell tomatoes at 15 rupees per kg, I sell mine for 40-80 rupees," he proudly states. His secret lies in off-season cultivation. Most farmers shy away from growing tomatoes during the monsoon season, but Changmai seizes this opportunity. By leveraging his greenhouses, he ensures a steady supply of high-quality tomatoes when the market demand is at its peak, thereby fetching premium prices.

Expanding Beyond Tomatoes: A Diverse and Profitable Greenhouse Operation

His innovative methods extend beyond tomatoes. Changmai's greenhouses are a heaven for various crops. Recently, he has been cultivating eggplants in one greenhouse and chilli peppers for seeds in another. Additionally, two of his greenhouses are dedicated to seedling production. "Greenhouse farming allows for off-season cultivation, which commands higher prices in the market," he explains. This strategy not only boosts his income but also ensures a continuous supply of fresh produce.

Changmai's success is not limited to his own farm. He is a beacon of knowledge and support for the local farming community. Besides producing a wide range of seedlings, such as papaya, chilli peppers, and lemons, he actively mentors other farmers. He provides them with essential advice on new farming techniques, medication, fertilizers, and water supply. Moreover, he visits their farms to offer personalized guidance and troubleshoot issues, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual growth.

A significant part of Changmai's income comes from his expertise in paddy seed production. For years, he has been cultivating high-quality paddy seeds, including flood-resistant and drought-tolerant varieties. His dedication to excellence has earned him certification for his seeds, further establishing his reputation as a leading agricultural innovator in the region.

Integrated Farming: A Path to Resilience and Sustainability

Changmai firmly believes in the power of integrated farming. "To be successful in agriculture, farmers should adopt integrated farming methods," he asserts. This approach involves cultivating multiple crops and livestock on the same farm, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem. By doing so, farmers can mitigate risks associated with crop failures. For instance, if one crop underperforms, another can compensate for the loss. "If my papaya crop doesn't do well, the eggplants grown on the same land will provide some income, and if not eggplants, then the cilantro beneath them will," he explains.

Market orientation is another cornerstone of Changmai's philosophy. He advises farmers to focus on crops that are in demand to avoid potential losses. "Farmers should cultivate crops that are in demand in the market to avoid losses," he emphasizes. This market-driven approach ensures that his produce always finds ready buyers, further enhancing his profitability.

Addressing new farmers, Changmai offers wise advice: "Farming is a science. Before starting any cultivation, farmers should thoroughly understand the crop they plan to grow." He encourages them to seek guidance from District Agricultural Science Centers and adopt best practices for success.

Debojit Changmai's story is a shining example of innovation, resilience, and community spirit. Through his dedication and forward-thinking approach, he has not only transformed his own life but also inspired countless farmers in Dhemaji and beyond. His journey underscores the potential of modern agriculture to create sustainable livelihoods and drive rural prosperity.
