India's milk output increased by 35.04 percent, reaching 200 million tonnes (mt) during the period of 2015-16 and 2020-21. Parshottam Rupala, Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy, gave this information in the Lok Sabha. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said in a separate answer that the US had decided to resume Indian mango shipments this year.
In six years, Karnataka has led a 55-mt increase (from 155 to 210 mt), although Uttar Pradesh is the leading producer in terms of total production.
India's milk output grew to 210 mt in 2020-21, according to provisional estimates presented in the Lok Sabha. In 2015-16, production was 155 mt.
Between 2015-16 and 2020-21, milk production in Karnataka increased by 72.39 percent (4.59 million tonnes). Milk output in the state increased from 6.3 million tonnes in 2015-16 to 10.9 million tonnes in 2020-21.
Major Milk Producer
Despite the fact that Uttar Pradesh remained the country's leading milk producer with 31.36 million tonnes in 2020-21, production fell by 1.58 percent from 2019-20. However, from 2015-16 and 2020-21, production increased by 18.84 percent (4.97 million tonnes)
Between 2015-16 and 2020-21, milk production in Kerala was on the decline with the exception of 2017-18. During the six-year span, milk production fell by around 1.15 lakh tonnes.
In 2020-21, production fell by 3.60 percent in Andhra Pradesh, 3.84 percent in Haryana, 2.56 percent in Uttarakhand, 27.61 percent in Arunachal Pradesh, 20.74 percent in Manipur, and 12.01 percent in Sikkim, compared to 2019-20.
In response to a question in the Lok Sabha about the government's efforts to boost milk production in the country, Rupala stated that the government has been undertaking some important Central sector and Centrally-sponsored milk production projects.
Since 2014, the government has been executing the Rashtriya Gokul Mission for the promotion and conservation of indigenous breeds, genetic up-gradation of bovine populations, and increased milk output and productivity of bovines, making milk production more profitable for dairy farmers.
According to him, the national dairy development programme aims to improve the quality of milk and milk products while also increasing the share of organized milk procurement.
