As a part of its winter school, Punjab Agricultural University’s Department of Entomology will be holding a 21-day training programme on ‘Commercial Apiculture for Livelihood Security of The Farmers and Unemployed Rural Youth’, which has been sanctioned by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

In the residential training programme, 25 trainees will be inducted, which will be held between 8th and 28th February 2022.

“The proposal was submitted to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under the guidance of Professor Pardeep K Chhuneja to update the scientists about the aspects of commercial apiculture” – said DK Sharma, head of the Department of Entomology. This will be the third consecutive winter school sanctioned by the ICAR, which is the apex body in agricultural research and education to the department.

At the winter school, from different parts of the country, budding scientists will get hands-on practical experience regarding the different aspects such as animal husbandry practices, diagnosis and management of honey bee pests and diseases, bee diversity and pollination requirement of plants; production, processing, and packaging of hive products, mass queen bee rearing, and bee breeding.

Scientists and researchers who are working in the field of entomology can apply for this programme through the ICAR website - https://cbp.icar.gov.in

Entomology is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. In the past, the term "insect" was less specific, and historically the definition of entomology would also include the study of animals in other arthropod groups, such as arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans. This wider meaning may still be encountered in informal use.

Like several of the other fields that are categorized within zoology, entomology is a taxon-based category in which any form of scientific study in which there is focus on insect-related inquiries.

Entomology overlaps with a cross-section of topics as diverse as molecular genetics, behavior,  neuroscience, biomechanics, biochemistry, systematics, physiology, developmental biology, ecology, morphology, and paleontology.
