Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), the flagship unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is set to enhance its commitment to renewable energy by installing solar power generation systems across its facilities. Recently, BSP signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chhattisgarh State Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA) to start solar projects within its plant premises and township.
The new initiative will see solar power systems installed on the rooftops of various buildings in the BSP plant and residential township in Bhilai. The project is expected to generate about 2 MW of electricity within the plant premises. Additionally, an ongoing project to install rooftop solar systems on residences and offices in the township is projected to generate another 3 MW of electricity. This combined effort aims to produce a total of 5 MW of solar power.
First Floating Solar Project in Chhattisgarh
In a significant stride towards renewable energy, BSP is also set to install Chhattisgarh’s first floating solar project. This 15 MW installation will be located at the Maroda-1 reservoir and is part of BSP’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy solutions. The floating solar project is expected to generate approximately 34.26 million units of green power annually, which will be used as captive power for BSP.
The solar initiatives are being operated through NTPC-SAIL Power Supply, a joint venture equally owned by NTPC Limited and SAIL. NTPC, acting as the consultant for the floating solar project, initiated the tender process in January 2024, with the engineering, procurement, and construction contract anticipated to be awarded soon. The project is slated for completion by 2025.
These ventures align with BSP’s commitment to energy conservation and reducing its carbon footprint. By embracing renewable energy solutions, BSP aims to lead by example in the steel industry, showcasing how traditional industries can integrate sustainable practices to contribute to environmental goals.
With a combined capacity of 20 MW from rooftop and floating solar installations, BSP is setting a precedent for sustainable energy use in industrial operations. As these projects come to fruition, they will not only bolster BSP’s energy efficiency but also support India’s broader renewable energy targets.
