Dead Rat Found in Police Officer's Breakfast Amid 'Bengaluru Bandh' Protest

The Joint Commissioner of Police asked the Yeshwantpur police to inquire about the hotel that supplied food to the police officer, and a notice was issued to the hotel owner.

A dead rat was found in the breakfast pack served to one of the police personnel who was assigned on security duty during the 'Bengaluru Bandh' protests initiated by the Karnataka farmers and organizations against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu.

After the incident took place, the Joint Commissioner of Police asked the Yeshwantpur police to inquire about the hotel that supplied food to the police officer, and a notice was issued to the hotel owner.

Now, one must understand that if rats enter your food or even the slightest exposure to rodents can cause many significant problems that have the potential to pose a significant health risk. 

Diseases Caused by Rats

Hantavirus

  • Common signs of Hantavirus appear within 1 to 5 weeks which majorly include, fatigue, fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain

  • Hantavirus can lead to lung congestion, fluid accumulation in the lungs, and breathlessness.

Lymphocytic Chorio-Meningitis

  • It is a neurological disease caused by rats and its early symptoms include headache, fatigue, vomiting, loss of appetite, nausea, muscle pain, and fever

  • This disease majorly affects the brain causing an inflammation of the meninges which is a membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Plague

  • Rats are the amplifying factor of this disease. Plague is of different types such as Bubonic, Septicemic, and Pneumonic, which are all caused by the Yersinia Pestis bacteria

  • Their symptoms are dependent on the various types and affect the immune system, blood system, and the lungs.

Salmonella

  • This particular disease is present in the digestive tract of some rodents.

  • Its symptoms include chills, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, and therefore, the consumption of contaminated food may cause a potential risk of contracting salmonella.
