As a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, the Department of Land Resources (DOLR), under the Ministry of Rural Development, organized a cleanliness event titled ‘Shramdaan- Swachhata hi Seva’ at the Shivaji Stadium Bus Terminal (NDMC Area) in New Delhi today. This event was part of the ongoing Swachhata Pakhwada - Swachhata hi Seva (SHS) campaign for 2023.
The Swachh Bharat Mission, with its focus on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a ‘Garbage Free India,’ aims to promote scientific waste management, the conversion of waste to wealth, and the implementation of a circular economy. In line with this vision, the DOLR orchestrated the event with the active participation of its officers and officials, led by Secretary Ajay Tirkey.
The cleanliness event garnered significant enthusiasm and participation not only from the officers and officials of the DOLR but also from the local community. The activities were meticulously organized, with four teams assigned to cover distinct segments of the Shivaji Stadium Bus Terminal.
The success of the event was evident in the impact it had on both the officers and officials of the DOLR and the general public, who actively engaged in Shramdaan (volunteerism) to contribute to the cleanliness drive.
The Swachhata hi Sewa Campaign, initiated by the Government of India, adopts a comprehensive approach involving all government departments to achieve a higher level of cleanliness through Shramdaan and Jan Bhagidari (community participation). This campaign is a significant step forward from the historic Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), which entered its second phase, SBM 2.0, in 2021. The success of this phase heavily relies on the active participation of citizens.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his call to action, urged all citizens to engage in one hour of Shramdaan for Swachhata at 10 AM on October 1, 2023. This collective effort serves as a ‘Swachhanjali’ (tribute) to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his Jayanti, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and community involvement in building a cleaner and healthier India.
As the nation prepares to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's birthday on October 2, 2023, events like ‘Shramdaan-Swachhata hi Seva’ remind us of his timeless message of cleanliness, selfless service, and the pursuit of a cleaner, more sustainable India.
