The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare recently unveiled the eagerly awaited second advance estimate for the area and production of horticultural crops for the year 2022-23. The report showcases remarkable statistics, suggesting that India is poised for a historic harvest in the horticulture sector.

The second advance estimate projects a total horticultural production of 351.92 million tonnes, an increase of approximately 4.74 million tonnes (1.37%) compared to the final figures of the preceding year, 2021-22. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, hailed this achievement and highlighted the continuous growth in horticultural production in the country.

This remarkable success, he emphasized, is a testament to the relentless efforts of Indian farmers, the dedication of scientists, and the farmer-centric policies of the Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has consistently championed the welfare of farmers.

Horticultural Crop Production in 2022-23: Key Highlights 

1. Historic Horticultural Production: The estimated horticultural production of 351.92 million tonnes in 2022-23 represents a significant upswing in comparison to the 2021-22 figures. This increase of 4.74 million tonnes (1.37%) underlines the robustness of the horticulture sector in India.

2. Fruitful Endeavors: Fruit production, a vital component of horticulture, is predicted to reach 108.34 million tonnes in 2022-23, a notable increase from 107.51 million tonnes in the preceding year, 2021-22. This points to a positive trend in fruit cultivation.

3. Vegetable Bounty: The second advance estimate for 2022-23 reports a projected vegetable production of 212.91 million tonnes. This is a substantial growth from the 209.14 million tonnes recorded in the previous year, highlighting the agricultural sector's versatility and adaptability.

4. Plantation Crop Expansion: Plantation crop production is poised for an upsurge, with an expected increase from 15.76 million tonnes in 2021-22 to 16.05 million tonnes in 2022-23. This growth signifies an uptick of about 1.78% in this crucial sector.

5. Potato Production Soars: The projection for potato production in 2022-23 is an impressive 60.54 million tonnes, demonstrating a significant increase from the 56.18 million tonnes recorded in 2021-22. This surge underscores the potential for diversification and expansion in agricultural practices.
