Green vegetables are a part of a healthy lifestyle. They are full of nutrients. Green and leafy vegetables play a vital role in maintaining a healthy body. 

Characteristics of Spinach  

Spinach is a commonly consumed green vegetable. It is dark green-colored. Spinach leaves are simple, triangular, or ovate.  It can be variable in size ranging from 2-30 cm. It is consumed either fresh or after storage using freezing, dehydration, or canning techniques. It can be eaten raw or cooked. Spinach is full of nutrients and is considered one of the healthiest vegetables. Eating a handful of spinach every day won't lead to any side effects. However, when consumed in excess, it can pose a serious threat. Let us take a look at the effects of overconsumption of spinach.  

Side effects of Spinach

Allergy: Apart from being a healthy source of vitamins and minerals, spinach is also a source of histamine. Histamine is a chemical component, found in the body of the cells. It can cause allergic reactions in individuals. Its symptom includes itching, sneezing, coughing, etc. 

Stomach issues: Due to being high in fiber content, spinach can cause various stomach issues, such as bloating, gas, and cramps.  

Kidney stones: Oxalates are compounds found in spinach. High amounts of oxalate in the body can lead to the formation of kidney stones. Calcium oxalate stones are the most common type of kidney stone. Boiling the spinach before consuming can reduce the high amounts of oxalate. Pairing with calcium-based food may also reduce the amount of oxalate.  

Blood Thinners: Spinach has high amounts of Vitamin K. It is a mineral that reduces the effectiveness of blood thinners. Blood thinners are usually given to patients to prevent the risk of stroke. Excessive amounts of vitamin K reduce the effect of these blood thinners on the body.  

Mineral Absorption: According to research, oxalate-rich foods can inhibit mineral absorption in the body. Oxalate is a type of anti-nutrient. Consuming large amounts of spinach can lead to the accumulation of high amounts of oxalate in the body, hence inhibiting mineral absorption.
