In response to the recent heavy rains and floods in Kuttanad, Agriculture Minister P Prasad has announced that the revenue department has established numerous relief camps across the district. Speaking to reporters during his visit to the affected areas on Saturday, the minister assured that adequate arrangements had been made to assist those impacted by the flood.
The primary directive given to the revenue department was to ensure the smooth relocation of individuals affected by the flood. Relief camps have been set up in various parts of the district, accommodating a total of 3,754 people in 58 camps. These camps will provide essential amenities such as food and drinking water to those seeking shelter.
Minister Prasad emphasized the government's readiness to tackle any crisis arising from the flood. To facilitate the smooth flow of water from Kuttanad, the estuaries at Thottapally and Anthakranazhi have been opened. Control rooms have been established at the collectorate and the agriculture department office to coordinate relief efforts effectively.
Preliminary reports from the agriculture department indicate that the state has already incurred agricultural losses exceeding Rs 96 crore due to the floods. However, the final report may reveal a higher figure. Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Minister Prasad stated that the government is committed to addressing the challenges faced by the people of Kuttanad.
To mitigate future water-related issues in the region, the state government has taken proactive measures.The drinking water project has reached the tender finalization stage, ensuring a sustainable water supply for the affected areas.
Additionally, a budget of Rs 26 crore has been sanctioned for increasing the height of 18 major roads in Kuttanad, aiming to minimize flood-related disruptions.
