International Day of Yoga: History

International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, is a global celebration dedicated to the practice of yoga. The idea for this special day was first proposed by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014. Recognizing the holistic benefits of yoga, he suggested June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, as it is the summer solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere.

The proposal received widespread support from the UN member states, leading to its official designation by the United Nations on December 11, 2014. The resolution highlighted the importance of yoga in promoting physical and mental well-being and encouraged people worldwide to embrace the practice.

Since its inception, International Yoga Day has gained significant momentum, with millions of people across the globe participating in yoga-related activities on this day. It serves as a platform to raise awareness about the transformative power of yoga, emphasizing its role in promoting health, mindfulness, and unity among individuals and communities.

International Yoga Day has become a symbol of the universal appeal and inclusivity of yoga, transcending cultural, religious, and geographical boundaries. The day is marked by yoga sessions, workshops, seminars, and mass demonstrations held in various cities worldwide, promoting the practice and benefits of yoga to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Through the observance of International Yoga Day, individuals are encouraged to incorporate yoga into their daily lives, fostering a healthier lifestyle and inner well-being.
